Celuk Village, Bali

Formerly known as a traditional Balinese village located in the entrance gate of Gianyar Regency ad has changed into a tourist attraction with its trademark in the form of gold and silver. The village located in Sukawati District, Gianyar Regency has the uniqueness and excellent in production of gold and silver handicrafts. Almost all the families and villagers are Balinese who professional, skilled and art soul to develop the creative design and variety of products related to the gold and silvers.

The beginning of Celuk’s traditions started when Nang Gati, a Celuk resident, went to the Mengwi Kingdom in 1915 to study metal craft. Upon his return, Nang Gati taught the first generation of craftsmen to make tools for religious ceremonies. The products of these craftsmen became accessories for the royal family and noblemen until the 1940s.

In the 1950s, Bali began receiving tourists and a lot of art shops started popping up and selling the jewelry. However, the real boom only began in the 1980s alongside the boom in tourism.

The village has become famous for producing high-grade gold and silver handicrafts, particularly jewelry. While these items are found in stores throughout the island, a visit to Celuk Village gives travelers a chance to see goldsmiths and silversmiths in action.

This craft village with long historical has been producing gold and silvers that penetrating the local, national and international markets. Various type of jewelry, either as souvenirs or export commodities are produced in this village includes variation type of rings, necklaces, earrings, hairpins, brooch and others. In addition to this, the artisans at Celuk Village are responding to the market demands and also produce the modern products such as medal, models and culture symbols.

The main road through the town is lined on either side with galleries and artist workshops; many doubling as households where jewelry-making have been in the family for generations. Apart from intricate bracelets, rings, necklaces, earrings and Balinese ceremonial jewelry, the artisans of Celuk Village also produce beautiful silverware, trays and dishes which can be bought directly from the men and women who made them.

How to get there

Celuk Village is located on the main road between Denpasar and Gianyar. While many items will display price tags, bargaining is still the norm; start with half what’s shown on the tag and go from there.
