Enchanting Lombok Island – The Sister of Bali Island

If you’re looking for some of that beachside and mountaintop serenity without the spring breakers and Eat, Pray, Love pilgrims, there are many options in the Indonesian archipelago (actually, thousands of them). One of them is Lombok, which is only a 20-minute hop from Bali Lombok is, in a word, enchanting.

With divine beaches, the majestic Mt Rinjani and spectacular marine life to discover, the island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara has no shortage of attractions both in and out of the water. It’s no wonder that Lombok become one of the most popular destination in West Nusa Tenggara.

Lombok Island is separated by the Lombok strait from Bali Island in the west and by Alas strait in the east from Sumbawa Island.   Challenge yourself with a trek up steep volcanic peaks. Hire a bike and cycle through lush evergreen rice paddies. Whichever way you choose to spend your time you won’t be disappointed with the spectacular natural beauty on offer here.

The Sasak people are the dominant ethnic group living in this island, which also consist of 5 regions: North Lombok, Central Lombok, East Lombok, West Lombok and Mataram city, the capital of West Nusa Tenggara. For a relaxing break from daily life, consider going island-hopping around the stunning Gili Islands. Among more than 20 gilis – local name that means ”small island” in Sasak language – three stood out to be the hot spot destination : Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air.

Make time to visit the West Nusa Tenggara Museum, Mayura Garden and Narmada Park to find more stories about the island. For the adventurous spirit, you can explore more of its south coast like the famous Tangsi ‘Pink’ Beach in further south east, with pretty corals making the shore looked blushed. Trek the path to find the amazing Senaru Waterfalls and Benang Kelambu Waterfalls for a soothing sight. You can choose to relax on endless white sand beaches, dive remote coral reefs or hike to see panoramic views.

Devastated by the series of earthquakes in 2018, these destinations are bouncing back and hungry for tourists. So pack your bags this coming dry season and go explore this paradise. It’s just a 20-minute flight from Bali to Lombok, but they are worlds apart. Different from the colour and energy of Bali, the laid-back vibe in Lombok is all about serenity and “unspoilt beauty”.
