The Safari Park in Bali’s Gianyar regency has named their newborn baby giraffe “Corona,” after the coronavirus. The calf was born on April 9 to mother Sophie and father Matadi, joining two other siblings at Bali Safari Park on the Indonesian holiday island

“Corona’s birth went smoothly, with the medical team monitoring everything via CCTV. The baby giraffe will be nursing from birth until it’s about four months old,” said Yohana Kusumaningtyas, a member of the veterinary team from Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) group.

Corona was born on April 9, becoming the fifth addition of the giraffe population at the Safari Park. Yohana added that the name “Corona” was suggested by Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Minister, Siti Nurbaya Bakar.

‘Corona’ was madam minister’s name of choice for this female baby giraffe because it was born amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” Yohana said. 

The Bali Safari Park has been temporarily closed since March, just like other tourist attractions across the island, as part of an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
