Indonesia’s Papua is beyond a shadow of a doubt a fascinating destination for adventurous travelers. Danau Habema (Lake Habema), located in Wamena, Jayawijaya regency in Papua province, will surely awaken one’s senses with its spectacular landscapes.
Habema Lake – a lake with the original name of the lake is located in the complexYuginopa Jayawijaya Mountains. With a height of 3225 meters above sea level, this lake is one of the highest lakes in Indonesia. You could see right Trikora towering peak in sight. At its peak, the ice grains that adorn equatorial country.
Habema lake scenery is incredible. The meadow seemed incessant eye. Dew often adorns the grass, be it morning, noon, or night. The lake, a shooting location for the Indonesian children film “Denias, Senandung di Atas Awan” (Denias, Humming Over The Cloud), was once named Yuginopa. Situated in the Jayawijaya mountain range, in a highland 3,225 meters above sea level, it claims the honor of being the highest lake in Indonesia. From here one can view the Trikora summit (formerly Wilhelmina), a rare site where snow can be found in the equator. The song of the wind in the valley is transformative. From afar the lake looks calm but as one gets closer there are small waves visible. The panorama is breathtaking with wide swathes of grassland and rolling fog throughout the day. Temperatures can drop drastically as winter is a yearlong affair here, with average temperatures ranging from 8 degrees centigrade to 3 degrees when evening falls.
According to stories circulating, you can find the rare black orchid at this place. Papua plateau is famous for a variety of orchid species. But unfortunately, now protected flora is rare anymore. But, if you’re lucky, you’ll find paradise and Astrapia which is endemic island birds.
Papua is renowned for its different types of orchids and in this area one can find the black orchid, now a protected species by the government. With some luck, one can catch a glimpse of the Cendrawasih (bird of paradise), a truly beautiful creature. Many climbers to the Jayawijaya mountain range head for Cartenz, a snow capped mountain, stopping by Lake Habema on their way. It is only 48 kilometers from Wamena and takes about 3 hours by car or motorcycle. Wamena is also renowned for its world famous coffee plantations producing some of the world’s best beans.
